How cool is it to plant a new vineyard in a virgin, previously untouched site? Where in the world can you be part of such a unique experience, and still expect to make serious wine? Mendoza is that place.

Qué tan bueno es plantar un viñedo nuevo en un sitio virgen, sin la influencia de la mano del hombre? ¿Dónde en el mundo se puede tener esta experiencia que es única, y esperar hacer un gran vino en serio? Mendoza es el lugar.

We disregarded this piece of land for a long time, but thanks to Pedro Parra’s soil studies and Alan York’s Biodynamic approach, it is now a living vineyard. Memories of the initial plantation, back in 1996, come flooding back, including the original tractor which is still with us, a relic of the ’70s.

Habiamos hecho caso omiso de este campo por mucho tiempo, pero gracias a los estudios de suelos de Pedro Parra y el trabajo biodinámico de Alan York, ahora es un viñedo. Los recuerdos de la plantación inicial en el año 1996 vuelven, incluso el tractor original sigue con nosotros, una reliquia de los años 70.

We start with delicate little Malbec plants, which look like nothing more than a bald stick with little roots.

Comenzamos con las «plantitas» de Malbec, son muy delicadas a simple vista, una estaca con raicillas.

These dormant 1-year old plants have their own roots, which we are able to plant directly, since Mendoza does not suffer from invasive pests. We begin planting in Spring, after the threat of freezing and frost has passed.

Estas plantitas en reposo tienen 1 año con sus propias raíces, y podemos plantarlas directamente en la tierra porque Mendoza sufre de pocas plagas. Plantamos en la primavera cuando la amenaza de las heladas ya ha pasado.

What is the first requisite of Biodynamic viticulture when planting in a virgin soil? That the soil be full of life. A natural solution to this requisite is the addition of humus: or pure organic matter.

¿Cuál es la principal condición de la viticultura biodinámica, cuando se planta en un suelo virgen? Que la tierra esté llena de vida. Una solución natural para esto es la adición de humus: o materia orgánica pura.

Since this is the very basis of biodynamic viticulture,  our team went on a fervent search for quality humus across Argentina, from Mendoza to Corrientes, passing through Rosario and Buenos Aires.

Ya que es la base para la viticultura biodinámica,  nuestro equipo salió en una búsqueda ferviente a través de Argentina, desde Mendoza hasta Corrientes, pasando por Rosario y Buenos Aires.

The benefits of humus come from the high levels of nutrients and beneficial microorganisms. In short: the better the humus count in the soil, the healthier and more productive the soil will be.

Los grandes beneficios del humus provienen de los altos niveles de nutrientes y micro-organismos beneficiosos que contiene. Cuanto mas humus haya en el suelo, mas saludable y productivo será el suelo.

Additionally, humus can hold the equivalent of 80% to 90% its own weight in moisture, increasing the soil’s capacity to withstand drought. The structure of humus also enables it to act as a natural buffer against soils that are too alkaline or acidic.

Además, el humus puede retener hasta 90% de su propio peso en agua, lo que aumenta la capacidad del suelo para soportar la sequía. La estructura del humus también le permite actuar como un amortiguador frente a los suelos que son demasiado alcalinos o ácidos.

This dream was made a reality mostly due to the hard working crew, who made over 173,000  holes in the ground bare-handed: an incredible work of ants.

Este sueño se hizo realidad debido principalmente al equipo que trabaja duro, que hizo más de 173,000 pozos en el suelo a mano: un increíble trabajo de hormigas.

The crew move together, one digging a hole, another holding the vine in place, another covering the roots with humus and then soil. Afterward, each planting is given a healthy dose of water…

Los trabajadores se mueven juntos, cada persona con una tarea: uno cava un pozo, otro coloca la plantita y el otro cubre las raíces con humus y suelo. Después, cada plantita va recibiendo sus dosis necesaria de agua…

…and nursery bags are placed over the vines to give them protection from solar radiation and provide a warm home to begin their lives.

…y polainas con filtro para la radiación solar se colocan sobre las plantitas para proveer un hogar protegido y cálido para comenzar sus vidas.

And then we wait. And watch. And fret and worry. And water. And wait a little longer.

Luego a esperar…  observamos… nos preocupamos, las regamos y esperamos un poco mas.

Walking through the tiny vines when all the workers have gone, has a quietness to it, a kind of freeze-frame that feels a bit like magic… but probably is just our love and pride for the new endeavor.

Caminar entre las viñas pequeñas cuando todos los trabajadores se han ido, da tranquilidad, un tipo de imagen congelada que se siente un como magia… pero probablemente es sólo nuestro amor y orgullo por el nuevo esfuerzo.
